How VA disability pay works
VA pays a monthly, tax-free amount to veterans with a disability caused or made worse by service. The amount depends on your combined rating and, from 30% up, on your dependents. Rates rise every December 1 by the same cost-of-living percentage as Social Security, so the next change is expected on December 1, 2026.
If you have more than one rating, VA combines them with its own method instead of adding them. Two ratings of 50% and 30% make 70%, not 80%. The calculator shows the math step by step.
